Nsimbi is a worldwide award-winning, Ugandan – American duo made up of Ugandan pioneer hip-hop GNL Zamba and US global artist Miriam Tamar. Built on acoustic sonority and indigenous African instruments, Nsimbi combines hip hop elements with English / Western songwriting and vowels in contemporary "Lugaflow," which combine the traditional and the new.
Their debut album, featured on KCRW's Rhythm Planet and Public Radio International's The World as well as NPR's Tiny Desk / All Songs Considered, created a globalized sound that was rooted in the rich and universal messages of old East African proverbs and people. Their musical style celebrates the beauty and relation of human beings with English, Swahili, Luganda and Lingala, through music and cultural bridges with lyrics.
Nsimbi soon charted top five in the USA , Canada and Uganda on the iTunes World Music update. Two international awards and ten nominations were given to the album within one year. Nsimbi created an exciting immersive live experience that encourages us to party around the communal flames. He was an official artist at the 2019 SXSW Music Festival with Afropop Worldwide showcases.
Nsimbi has also been received into prominent arts places such as the Smithsonian National Museum of African Arts and the Fowler Museum UCLA, which are both sonically and visually diverse, but also rich in cultural contents. GNL Zamba is one of the most influential hip-hop artist of East Africa and has credited rap with the use of Ugandans native language to the popular culture of the region.
