Bobi Wine Invites Besigye To Join His NUP

There are now worries that it might be too late to save the Najjanankumbi-based party amid the internal deadlock that is dissolving.

The Democratic Party (which in 2020 experienced a major flight of members to the NUP) suffered the same fate, according to Hajj Latif Ssebagala, a member of the NUP and a former representative for Kawempe North. He claimed that the FDC's current condition is "beyond repair" and that the party now risks the same fate.

The best course of action is to accept that the FDC chapter has shut down and cannot be saved, said Ssebagala in a televised interview, rather than investing time and money in trying to retake control.

"They must acknowledge that their party is now over, just as our efforts to repair the DP, which were fruitless, were. It no longer exists. The wisest move for those in Katonga is to confess that their party has been taken and join us to jointly bolster our forces and map out the route forward," he stated.

This week, Col. Besigye's faction of the FDC held a parallel delegates' conference where they elected Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago as President and Francis Mwijukye as Secretary General, succeeding Patrick Amuriat and Nathan Nandala Mafabi, respectively. This marked the peak of the internal power struggle within the FDC.
When Dr. Besigye, Chairman Wasswa Biriggwa, and Spokesperson Semujju Nganda accused the party leadership of accepting "dirty money" from President Yoweri Museveni in July, the long-simmering turmoil inside the FDC erupted.

Col. Besigye told the media that they are attempting to retake the party's headquarters in Najjanankumbi after this week's delegate convention.

This was then confirmed by Lord Mayor Lukwago, who also hinted that the Amuriat group might not even be in possession of the land title for the party's office space.
