Bobi Wine, also known as
Robert Kyagulanyi, has been at the heart of a contentious dispute following
remarks he made during a recent visit to the UK. Due to the
singer-turned-politician's remarks, there have been conflicting responses from
both admirers and detractors on his gender identity.
In a speech at the National
Unity Platform (NUP) headquarters after his return to Uganda, Bobi Wine
addressed the questions raised by his gender identity. Given his public
popularity in areas of sex, love, and relationships, he wondered why his
identity was being questioned. His satisfaction at being married to a woman was
expressed, with a focus on his gender identification.
To allay any worries about his
gender identification, Bobi Wine even suggested, in an unprecedented move, that
he publicly kiss his wife. Then, he said, "You all know me, but you want
me to remind you, I have a wife. Do you want me to bring her here and kiss her
in front of you?" during his address about LGBT issues.
The recent passing of Uganda's
Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023, which has the resounding backing of over 90% of
parliamentarians, including members of his own National Unity Platform (NUP),
sets the stage for Bobi Wine's remarks. He made the contentious argument in the
same interview that the law was not passed with the best interests of Ugandans
in mind but rather as a political ploy to quell resistance.
Politicians have
responded to the statements made by the NUP president, which has sparked a
substantial controversy. Member of Parliament for Bugiri Municipality Hon.
Asuman Basalirwa took a stance against Bobi Wine, denouncing him for allegedly
demonizing and linking opposition MPs to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni's
plot to enact the Anti-Homosexuality Act
